Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminum producer, won the prestigious ‘Mahatma Awards 2020’ for its continuous CSR initiatives. The award ceremony was held on 30th Jan 2021 at India International Center, New Delhi.
The Mahatma Award honors the most accomplished sustainable, responsible and social efforts and initiatives within the private, public, and development sector and this recognition is testimony to BALCO CSR’s success in leveraging its resources, expertise, and talent to make a positive impact for the larger good.
BALCO has paved the way for financial empowerment and self-reliance of community members in Korba, Chhattisgarh. The company has rolled out various community development initiatives, health camps, training and skill development programs and formed Self-Help Groups (SHG), aimed at empowering members of the community and enabling them to pursue their entrepreneurial ventures in farming, arts & crafts, retail, beauty & grooming, tailoring, and education.

BALCO has been a frontrunner in transforming the socio-economic landscape of Korba. The company has undertaken several social development projects under sustainable livelihood, women empowerment, healthcare, education, agriculture benefiting over 1,50,000 people in the Korba region. In the changing paradigm of social fabric due to the pandemic, BALCO is also helping communities sustain livelihoods, working in close coordination with district and local administration.
