Malta envoy quits after comparing Merkel to Hitler

Malta’s ambassador to Finland has resigned after comparing German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, native media verbalize.

Michael Zammit Tabona reportedly wrote on his Facebook page: “Seventy-five years prior to now we stopped Hitler. Who will close Angela Merkel? She has fulfilled Hitler’s dream! To govern Europe.”

The post has since been deleted.

Maltese International Minister Evarist Bartolo acknowledged Germany would collect an apology, the Instances of Malta experiences.

Mr Bartolo suggested the newspaper that he had suggested the ambassador to get rid of the issue “as soon as I turn into alerted to it”.

Mr Zammit Tabona, who was Malta’s ambassador in Finland in 2014, has to this point made no issue on the row.

He is reported to be a political appointee – no longer a profession diplomat.
